No. 17 Tigers Start Jim Reid Classic With Convincing Win
GEORGETOWN, Ky. – The No. 17 Georgetown College men's basketball team (5-2) kicked off the Jim Reid Classic with a 97-81 win over West Virginia Tech (1-4) in Davis-Reid Alumni Gym on Friday night.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Tigers followed up their 50% shooting night with another highly efficient 55% night of shooting the basketball. Led by Rashad Bishop's 21 points (12 in the second half), the Tigers picked up a convincing 97-81 win over the Golden Bears to begin the Jim Reid Classic. From the jump, it was back a back-and-forth battle with Georgetown holding an 11-10 lead at the first media timeout. Fueled by five points from Darien Lewis, the Tigers' hot shooting increased as they went on to command a 27-18 lead at the next media timeout. Bishop scored the final four points for Georgetown in the first half, who took a 44-34 lead into the break.
In the second half, the Tigers shot an even better clip, making half their treys and over half their field goals. A couple of quick baskets by Bishop forced an early Golden Bears timeout before four different Tigers combined to sink shots before the next break in action. Lewis' 3-pointer gave the Tigers their largest lead of the game (77-52) of 25 with 10:18 to play. Down the stretch, the Tigers closed out the Golden Bears with consistent defense and solid passing to win 97-81.
THE TEAM
Georgetown shot 55.6% from the field. The Tigers were 6-22 (27.3%) from deep and shot 11-14 (78.6%) at the free-throw line. GC won the rebounding battle, 34-33, while the Tigers also held the assists advantage, 17-8. The Tigers doubled up the Golden Bears in steals, 12-6, and had more blocks, 4-1.
THE PLAYERS
* Rashad Bishop scored a team-high 21 points on 7-of-8 shooting from the field while going 7-of-9 from the foul line.
* Scotty Browning added 16 points and dished out five assists with four steals.
* Darien Lewis had 15 points and six rebounds.
