Szewinski dominates in 7th straight RSC sweep

Georgetown continued its roll in the River States Conference with a 3-0 sweep of Cumberland on Tuesday night. It marked the 7th straight sweep for Georgetown to start as a member of the conference.

The old MSC rivals split the first 8 points of set 1, before Cumberland rolled off 4 straight to take an early edge. Georgetown countered with a 5-1 run to tie the set back up at 9. After a CU kill, Georgetown came back with 3 straight thanks to a kill from Adam Szewinski and 2 aces from Finn Heinemann. CU got a point back to get within 12-11. The Tigers returned to Szewinski in the middle with 2 more kills as part of 3 straight to take a 15-11 lead. CU came right back with 3 straight to cut the margin to 1 again and set up an extended sequence of single point exchanges. Georgetown made just enough plays in the end to secure a 25-21 win.

Cumberland started set 2 with the momentum as the Phoenix built an early 5-3 lead. Georgetown came back with a run that Cumberland never recovered from. 2 kills from Jose Acuna Yepes were part of an 8-point explosion that saw Georgetown run out to an 11-5 lead. Cumberland got 1 back, but the Tiger momentum was too strong. With an 11-6 lead, Georgetown went on a 6-1 run for a 10-point lead. Miguel Ariza Vega and Robin Puss capped a dominant set with 2 tandem blocks to close out a 25-11 win. The Tiger defense was staggering in the set as it held the Phoenix to just 3 kills and a hitting percentage of -.158.

The roll carried into the 3rd set for Georgetown. After CU scored the first 2 points, Georgetown countered with 7 of 8 to take command and force Cumberland to a timeout. The Phoenix used its 2nd and final timeout after a 5-0 Georgetown run that gave the Tigers a 15-5 lead. Cumberland never got close than 9 the rest of the way as Georgetown rolled to a 25-13 win to close out.

Georgetown hit .397 in the match, anchored by a dominant performance from Adam Szewinski. The sophomore middle was given 12 kill chances and converted on 10 for a hitting percentage of .833. Finn Heinemann spread the ball out to finish with 33 assists.

The Tigers now focus on Senior Day at Davis-Reid Alumni Gym and a 1st place battle with Campbellsville. Senior Day and the match are slated for a 6:00pm start.
