Tigers need just over 1 hour to sweep Brescia
Georgetown took on Brescia Friday night at Great Crossing High School with some uncertainty playing in a new arena. Once the match got started, Georgetown looked more than comfortable in a match that lasted just over 1 hour in total and resulted in an easy sweep.
The Tigers could do no wrong from the start. Back-to-back kills from Kristjan Unt got the Tigers going on a run that Brescia could not stop. 3 aces from Finn Heinemann soon followed as part of a 9-0 run to start the match and send a stunned Brescia to a timeout. Brescia got its first 2 points on Georgetown serve errors. It's first point earned came after Georgetown had taken a 17-2 lead. The Tigers hit .591 in the set and cruised to a 25-8 win.
Brescia got itself going in the 2nd set and traded points with Georgetown in the early going. With a 4-3 lead, the Tigers looked poised for another big run as kills from Robin Puss and Michal Bak, followed by a block from Miguel Ariza Vega, pushed the lead to 7-3. Brescia stayed in it and fought back to get within 1 at 11-10. From there, Georgetown ran away again. The Tigers went on a 10-2 to take command at 21-12. Brescia got 3 back to get within 6 but got no closer. Miguel Ariza Vega punctuated the set win with a kill and 2 solo blocks to give GC the 25-15 win.
Georgetown kept going in the 3rd and scored 6 of the 1st 7 points and 9 of 11. Brescia then tightened the set up and got within 5 at 11-6. Georgetown countered with a final dagger. Kristjan Unt and Adam Szewinski jumpstarted a run of 10 straight points to rocket the Tigers to a 21-6 lead. From there, Georgetown coasted at a 25-10 win to complete the sweep.
The Tigers dominated virtually every category possible in the win. Brescia's biggest trouble point was the serve receive. Georgetown smashed 17 aces in the win, led by 6 from Kristjan Unt and 5 from Finn Heinemann. Unt also led the attack with 11 kills and hit .500. For his part, Heinemann dished out 30 assists to an offense that hit .508 for the match and had just 4 attack errors.
Georgetown looks to continue the momentum against Saint Mary of the Woods on Saturday. First serve from Great Crossing HS is set for 1:00pm.
